How to Prepare Website Content Before a Redesign

Prepare your website content before design work starts so the new structure reflects real customer questions instead of placeholder copy.

Design cannot rescue missing information. Before a redesign, gather the facts, questions, proof, and decisions the site must support. Content preparation does not mean writing every sentence before a designer starts; it means giving the structure something real to hold.

Audit what already exists

List the pages, documents, images, forms, analytics, search traffic, and links currently connected to the site. Mark what is useful, outdated, duplicated, legally important, or missing.

Collect customer language

Review enquiries, sales calls, reviews, support messages, and conversations with staff. The phrases customers use often reveal clearer page headings and more useful explanations than internal terminology.

Good website decisions begin with a clear view of the customer journey.

Assign a decision owner

Choose who can approve service descriptions, prices, policies, images, and final copy. A redesign slows down when every sentence needs permission from an undefined group.

Plan content in priority order

Start with the pages that support the main customer journey: homepage, core services, proof, contact, and essential policies. Add secondary resources once the foundation is accurate and usable.
